Synchronise your diary for January 31, when the York Energise Synchronised Swimming Group will be taking the plunge with its first open evening.

The free event, from 7.30pm until 8.30pm, will allow anyone interested in taking up the sport to find out more, watch existing members and even get in the pool and learn a few quick and basic techniques.

City leisure councillor Sonja Crisp, said: “York is the only place in North Yorkshire offering synchronised swimming as a sport.

“We have a new six-week course starting in February and this informal open evening will help to give newcomers a feel for this fun and energetic activity.

“This friendly group already has about 25 members and anyone who is confident in deep water is welcome to come along to the open evening – particularly men, women and teenagers. Simply turn up with your costume and join in the fun!”

City of York Council’s aquatics community sports coach Catherine Butt has recently secured £1,600 from the Sport England Sportivate fund to help encourage new participants into the “Try a new sport in 2014” programme. The funding will support four beginner courses this year, the first starting on February 7, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm and the following one in May.
