Two soldiers have died in a car crash near a North Yorkshire golf club.

The 23-year-old male driver and his 20-year-old woman passenger were in a black Seat Leon car that left Leyburn Road near Catterick Golf Club and crashed into a tree.

The man was declared dead at the scene and the woman was taken by ambulance to Darlington Memorial Hospital, where she later died. Both were serving members of the army.

No details of their regiments or identities have been released, though relatives have been informed.

The crash closed the road for nearly six hours. North Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash at 8.05pm on Saturday, or who saw the car before the crash, to contact them.
