ALED JONES (HAS, Jan 18) complains as the lack of democracy in this country then goes on to bang the same tired old socialist drum about the Queen.

Her Majesty is a nominal head of State with little real power but is a great part of our nations’ heritage.

Mr Jones fails to mention the fact that the EU president, Herman Van Rompuy, was appointed, not elected, and that we are given no say as to who actually governs us – Westminster by elected representatives or Brussels by secret committees.

Our democracy has been taken away from us by stealth.

GN Bull, Darlington.
