FRESH plans for signs on a supermarket giant’s new store as part of the redevelopment of York’s White Swan Hotel have been drawn up after previous proposals were blocked.

Sainsbury’s was refused permission by City of York Council for signs on the outside of the historic Piccadilly building after planning officials said they would be too large and would damage the appearance of the site.

The firm has now submitted a new application for the signage scheme, having adjusted the design, with its agents saying the plans were “appropriate and necessary”.

The store will create the equivalent of 20 full-time jobs, with the upper floors of the former hotel - which have been empty for decades – being turned into flats.
