SPORTS clubs, fitness instructors and health organisations in York are being invited to sign up for a record number of events taking place in the city this year.

The free programme, running from May to October, is intended to showcase fitness opportunities in the city and encourage more residents to join or volunteer at sports clubs. City of York Council, which has organised the events, said they were intended to tie in with the Tour de France as the route of its opening stage, Le Grand Depart, will include York.

Events include the Just 30 Fair on May 24, Commonwealth Games open days from July 23 to August 3, a Celebrating Ability Week from August 4 to 10 and the Eng-AGE 50+ Games from September 27 to October 5.

More details, including registration and information packs, are available by emailing sports participation officer Dean Sharp at dean.sharp@york.gov.uk or by phoning 01904 553377.
