AN APPEAL has gone out to track down the vandals who daubed walls in part of York with ugly graffiti.

Police have condemned the damage as “utterly pointless”, and urged anyone who recognises the designs to contact them.

These four spraypainted “tags” were found on walls in The Groves on Wednesday evening, but it is not known when they were painted.

One of the tags appears to read “Zeus”, while the other three look to be in a similar style, using the same coloured paint.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “These are acts of utterly pointless and mindless vandalism which do nothing but spoil the look of the area. As these are highly distinctive ‘tags’.

"It is highly likely that sombody will recognise them and know those responsible. Anyone who can identify the vandals is urged to contact police as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information should phone York police on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111, quoting reference 12140007911.

Tagging is the ruination of many great European cities. Zero toleration in York is essential as once it gets a foothold the City will be covered in the rubbish. I don't even like Banksy's daubings on classical buildings, let alone untalented doodlers turning public buildings into toilet walls.

A free dissolvent from the spray paint manufacturers should be demanded at their own development cost!

As with the litter bin vandals they should make them remove the results of their dirty work.

They could do it whilst we throw rotten eggs at them. It's be a new art form.

"Thumbs down brigade" is right, probably because what you're saying is total hogwash. I've lived in the Groves for twenty years; the student population can be a bit loud, certainly, and the front garden of your archetypal student house is probably a bit of a tip. But vandals they aren't. A fiver says this is the work of bored, feckless teenagers, rather than anybody with the wherewithal to get a university placement.

In keeping with most of the previous comments, the vandals should be hung drawn and quartered with their heads put on spikes over the spray paint aisle at Halfords. Their parents should also have their left hand cut off so they have to wipe with their right.

Either that or maybe find the youth of york something better to do - perhaps some youth clubs. Remember them?

Fortunately York is remarkably free of this rubbish, which must be attributable to a rapid removal strategy. It's certainly better now than three or four years ago. Keep it up.

I'm annoyed yet again that people like to put ALL teenagers in the same boat. We aren't all bad, actually I'm care for everyone around me and respect people, I'm not a nasty nor horrible person and it hurts me to think that people say that about us. One day I may save your, treat people how you'd like to be treated.

It is graffitti like this which angers and annoys everybody... I've seen some graffitti which is quite good, a 3d depiction of a fictional urban scene, a portrait of "Ron Burgondy" from the film Anchorman - things like that colour up otherwise plain underpasses...

... but this... this is just utterly pointless moronic vandalism by some braindead inbred ejit without enough brainpower to think up of something better to do.
