New Monks Cross stores start to take shape

A £90 MILLION shopping complex on the edge of York which will include a John Lewis store is taking shape as the clock ticks down towards its April opening.

The framework of the buildings at the Vangarde Shopping Park at Monks Cross, also housing Marks & Spencer and Next stores, has been under construction since last summer and work is now focusing on fitting out the shops.

Developers The Oakgate Group and Caddick Construction say the centre, which will have Giraffe, Frankie & Benny’s, Nando’s and Prezzo restaurants, is on schedule and due to open in time for Easter.

The development has provided £13.75 million towards a neighbouring community stadium for York City FC and York City Knights.

Did the retailers know that once they'd spent a fortune on making the front of the building look nice someone would come along and plant a forest in front of it? Whatever next? Or - whatever. Next.

I can see them being built from my house. John Lewis sells american cereals such as Lucky Charms too, so I can go back to childhood days! I do wonder about bus provision though - do they just expect people to get the P&R 9 bus from the city and walk across, or will provision be made for local people using the 12 and 20 to get fairly close to the shops (as opposed to getting off at Sainsburys and having to walk quite a way)

As usual, whole place designed around the car. Lets hope bus routes are reviewed once it is open and plenty of bus lanes put in, otherwise they will be all stuck in the gridlock!
