SHOPPERS at a York supermarket have been evacuated from the store today.

The Press understands shoppers have been asked to leave the Asda superstore at Monks Cross this morning, with reports on social media suggesting a power cut was responsible.

A spokesman for the store said the shoppers were allowed back into the supermarket at about 12.15pm, but it was unclear what had caused the power failure.

He said: “It’s really unfortunate, and we’re very sorry for the inconvenience. At the moment we’re trying to assess what’s happened.

“We are open again and trading as normal, but the retail park has been fine so I can’t comment until we’re certain what happened.”

Northern Powergrid, which is responsible for the electricity supply in the area, said no faults had been reported to them, and nowhere else in York had suffered a power failure at this time.

North Yorkshire Police said they had not been alerted to the incident.
