A 78-YEAR-OLD York theatre is to get a facelift after plans to improve its appearance and visibility were approved.

New lighting and signs will be fitted to the facade of the Joseph Rowntree Theatre in Haxby Road, meaning it will be illuminated throughout the night, after its owners said its historic significance needed to be better reflected.

The proposals have been given planning permission by City of York Council. The theatre was opened in 1935 by Seebohm Rowntree, then chairman of the Rowntree chocolate dynasty, as the Joseph Rowntree Hall and has been in constant use for almost eight decades.
