ALMOST 200 motorcyclists have been prosecuted after being caught speeding in East Yorkshire under a new Humberside Police campaign.

Operation Achilles, which has run since 2004, aims to reduce the number of bikers killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads.

Between March and October 2013, 196 people were prosecuted for speeding across East Yorkshire, 48 of whom were travelling faster than 85mph and summonsed to court.

A further 126 people were offered the opportunity to take part in a one-day course which highlights the vulnerability and perception of motorcycle riders.

Officers have been granted funding by East Riding of Yorkshire Council to use an unmarked “camera bike” to capture evidence of dangerous or antisocial driving in the area, along with highly visible traffic patrols throughout the area.

The operation is set to continue into next year.
