DVD chain Blockbuster is to disappear from the high street within days after administrators failed to find a buyer.

A Blockbuster store in York Road, Acomb, which is the only remaining outlet in the city, will close by Monday. It previously survived the axe when administrators took over the chain in October.

Administrators Moorfields Corporate Recovery announced that following the closure of 173 stores two months ago, Blockbuster’s remaining 91 shops will now face the same fate, with the loss of 808 jobs.

Joint administrators Simon Thomas and Nick O’Reilly said: “We appreciate this is a difficult time for all concerned and would like to thank staff for their professionalism and support over the past month. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure a buyer for the group as a going concern and as a result had to take the regrettable action to close the remaining stores.”

All stores will have ceased operations by December 16, Moorfields said, with all remaining stock to be sold by tomorrow and up to 90 per cent discount on offer.

Blockbuster also had a shop in Haxby Road, though that was listed for closure when the business first went into administration in January this year.
