A TRACTOR driver almost collided with a moving freight train near Selby this weekend, British Transport Police have said.

The incident happened at 2.20pm on Saturday at High Eggborough crossing, and has been labelled a “near collision” by the BTP.

Police Constable Nick Storey said: “A freight train travelling along the line narrowly avoided a collision with a tractor at the crossing. The train driver spotted the tractor crossing the tracks and had to apply the emergency brakes to avoid hitting it. The driver was extremely shaken and had to be relieved from his duties following the incident.

“I would like to trace the driver of the tractor, which was a blue New Holland tractor with a yellow front loader filled with bales of straw. We are keen to determine the exact circumstances surrounding this incident. It may have been that the tractor driver followed the correct procedures at the crossing so it's vital that we trace them.”

Anyone who recognises the tractor or has information which could help the BTP find the tractor driver should phone British Transport Police on 0800 405040 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
