Work may start soon on stalled hotel site

York Press: The site in Walmgate The site in Walmgate

A STALLED project to build a 102-bedroom boutique hotel in the centre of York could be kickstarted soon.

Sojourn Hotels secured approval for a Hotel Indigo on the site of the former Infinity motorcycle showroom in Walmgate in 2011, saying it would create 40 new jobs, but work has yet to start and the land has recently been used as a car park.

City of York Council refused permission for the 45-space car park to continue operating earlier this year, although it is still in use.

However, planning consultants Design Coalition, who are acting for Sojourn, have now asked the authority to clarify “outstanding issues regarding the building design” and said in a letter to planners: “It appears the project will be proceeding shortly.”

Sojourn has previously said construction work on the hotel - including a reception, bar and spa-style bedrooms - would take about a year to complete. Infinity moved to new premises in Piccadilly when its Walmgate site was demolished.

The only reason the council said no to the temporary car park is because it is taking away revenue from THEM!

Perhaps the space could be used as a residents' car park, get cars off Navigation Road (especially at the bottom near Foss Islands, and at the very top near Walmgate) and off Walmgate itself.
