A STALLED project to build a 102-bedroom boutique hotel in the centre of York could be kickstarted soon.

Sojourn Hotels secured approval for a Hotel Indigo on the site of the former Infinity motorcycle showroom in Walmgate in 2011, saying it would create 40 new jobs, but work has yet to start and the land has recently been used as a car park.

City of York Council refused permission for the 45-space car park to continue operating earlier this year, although it is still in use.

However, planning consultants Design Coalition, who are acting for Sojourn, have now asked the authority to clarify “outstanding issues regarding the building design” and said in a letter to planners: “It appears the project will be proceeding shortly.”

Sojourn has previously said construction work on the hotel - including a reception, bar and spa-style bedrooms - would take about a year to complete. Infinity moved to new premises in Piccadilly when its Walmgate site was demolished.
