A YORK councillor is to call for the city’s deputy council leader to resign after claiming she had failed to ensure the city has enough affordable housing.

Rawcliffe, Skelton and Clifton Without councillor Joe Watt, of City of York Council’s Conservative group, will move a motion at Thursday’s full meeting of the authority requesting Coun Tracey Simpson-Laing quits as the Labour council’s cabinet member for health, housing and adult social services.

He said she had consistently supported or brought in policies which had led to less affordable housing being built in York.

Coun Simpson-Laing said the motion was a “bitter personal attack”, and the Tories had opposed Labour’s plans for new homes across York, which the party has said will help drive down prices and address the city’s “housing crisis”.
