HIGH winds have been causing disruption across much of North Yorkshire, with a number of road accidents and fallen trees. North Yorkshire Police say they are dealing with 50 weather-related incidents at the moment, and firhave urged drivers to take care.

Deployment manager Paul Richardson, from the North Yorkshire Police force control room, said:

"Drivers should give extra time to react to debris that may be in the road. A lot of this morning's incidents could have been avoided if people slowed down."

Confirmed weather-related incidents include the closure of both Newgate Market and Rowntree Park in York.

Rubbish collections are going ahead as normal, but City of York Council says there will inevitbaly be a lot of wind-blown debris around. Street cleaning and maintenance staff have been sent to help the clear up operation.

In Acomb a fallen tree has crushed parked 4x4 pick-up car opposite the Sun Inn. Traffic was delayed while council workers cleared up at the scene.

A serious accident on the A168 at Asenby has closed the road. Three lorries collided in the south-bound carriageway at 5.38am. One of the drivers was trapped in his cab for almost two hours and has now been flown to James Cook Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. The southbound carriageway is fully closed and will remain so for some time, say police.

Another lorry crash has caused disruption on A19 soutbound at Knayton near Thirsk. A lorry blew over in high winds at 7.10am, and emergency services remain on the scene.

A Vauxhall Zafira crashed into a ditch in Ings Road in Brompton by Sawdon near Scarborough just after 7am. Police said the driver has been arrested on suspicion of driving while over the alcohol limit.

Train passengers are advised to allow extra time for journeys. East Coast is running a revised timetable today, and pre-booked passengers can use tickets on alternative services or on Friday. More trees and telegraph poles have come down across the county, including a telegraph pole on Main Street in Thornton le Moor near Northallerton, and on a minor road at Thornthorpe near Tollerton and Boroughbridge.

A tree has fallen at Barlby Community Primary School in Barlby near Selby, and a road sign has blown into the road in Plompton near Knaresborough.

Trees have also fallen on the B1222 near the caravan park at Naburn; in Buttercrambe Road in Stamford Bridge; at the foot of Sutton Bank; in Pale Lane in carlton near Skipton; in Wighill Lane in Tadcaster; on the A59 near Jennyfield; in Marine Way in Ripon; on the B6271 at Great langton; in Stumps Lane in Darley near Harrogate; in Scawton near Richmond; and in Norwood Grove in Harrogate; between Ulleskelf and Towton.

A trampoline has blown free and is on the B1224 at Long Marston and drivers were urged to take care while police try to recover it.

Part of the roof of the Tesco store in Huntington Road in York has also come loose.  

Fire crews have been called out in Harrogate to St Andrews Walk, where a shed has come loose and could blow onto the street; and to a loose metal fence at the rear of Dragon Parade.
