City of York Council has won a national award for its work on increasing car sharing.
The Energy Saving Trust Fleet Hero Awards celebrates organisations that are reducing fuel bills and lowering their carbon footprints while also recognising companies that supply cost and fuel-saving products or services to fleets.
The council won the Grey Fleet Management Award and was a runner-up for the Business Mileage Management category, recognising the work over the past three years which has seen changes to the council’s staff fleet, in particular a 50 per cent reduction in the number of staff using their own vehicles for business use.
This follows a review by the Energy Savings Trust in 2010, on behalf of the council, which benchmarked the number of vehicles, mileage and CO2 produced by council fleet activities.
This triggered changes including the introduction of low emission and hybrid pool cars, a car club and car sharing schemes.
The awards ceremony was held at the Institute of Directors in London.
