Gremlins hit internet registration for York's Brass Monkey Half Marathon
UNPRECEDENTED demand for places in a York half marathon brought entry systems to a standstill within hours and left angry would-be runners without a spot in the race.
The internet registration for the Brass Monkey Half Marathon crashed almost as soon as it opened, and now organisers at York Knavesmire Harriers are to run a ballot for the remaining 500 places.
Registration opened on Saturday at 9am, and Rob Champion, of Sports Systems, the company that provides the online system, said 800 people logged on as the site went live.
He said: “We didn’t anticipate it was going to be this much of a feeding frenzy, I don’t think anybody could have.”
The race, which will be on January 19, reached capacity within an hour and the site shut down, but not before about 500 multiple places were issued leaving some runners with several places, and many with none.
Many took to the Harriers’ Facebook page to complain they had spent up to an hour-and-a-half trying to register, had been charged several times, or did not know if they had a place.
The club has now issued statements via its website and Facebook page apologising for the problems.
It said: “We would like to apologise once again for the system difficulties experienced by those applying to enter the 2014 Brass Monkey Half Marathon.
“The unprecedented demand resulted in a poor user experience which caused understandable confusion and frustration.”
Mr Champion said Sports Systems had now refunded the multiple entries and, with the Harriers, would run a ballot for the remaining places meaning the race could not be filled fairly and without more technical problems.
He said: “We would like to thank everybody for their patience and understanding.
“It is a fantastic race and we hope those who got in have an enjoyable race and those who did not can understand and hopefully get in next time.”
The ballot will be open from Thursday, November 7, to Sunday, November 10 and all entrants will be informed whether they have won a place by Sunday, November 24.
