Woman kidnapped and raped in York, hears court
A WOMAN was abducted in York city centre and raped three times on a journey to and from Malton, it has been alleged in court.
A 36-year-old man yesterday appeared before York magistrates facing multiple charges, including three of rape, one of attempted rape and one of kidnap.
Mark Anthony Thompson, 36, is alleged to have forced the 20-year-old woman into his car at 4am on Tuesday as she was walking through the city centre.
He is accused of raping her twice in Stonebow before taking her to Foss Islands Road and raping her there. He is also charged with attempting to rape her and of driving her to Malton before returning with her to York.
During the brief hearing, magistrates heard the charges were too serious for them to try and they sent him to be tried by a judge and jury at York Crown Court.
He will appear before the higher court on November 15 for a preliminary hearing.
Thompson, of Hospital Fields Road in Fulford was kept by police in custody between his arrest until the hearing. His lawyer John Howard did not apply for bail and magistrates remanded him in custody until the crown court appearance.
He was not asked to enter his plea to the charges.
