THEY might want to take over the universe but Daleks still need a hand to get into certain positions.

York Maze enlisted the help of plant hire firm WM Birch to hoist the four-metre wooden Doctor Who character onto the top of its giant bonfire with a telescopic handler, ahead of the Elvington attraction’s November 5 party.

The York Maze Fireworks Spectacular will be choreographed to a soundtrack of hits on the theme of Doctor and Who, as part of its celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the sci-fi series, and the Dalek Guy has been specially commissioned for the event. It mirrors the site’s giant Dalek-shaped maize maze.

Tom Pearcy, the attraction’s owner, said: “It will be packed with pyrotechnics and will be quite a spectacle when it goes off as the bonfire is lit.”

After the fireworks, York party band Huge will be playing live at the maze’s marquee. Tickets must be bought in advance from yorkmaze.co.uk and cost £12.95 for adults and £9.95 for three to 15-year-olds.

Gates open at 4.30pm on Tuesday, rides and stalls run from 6pm, the giant bonfire with the Dalek Guy starts from 7.30pm and fireworks start at 8pm.
