A YOUNG chorister from York Minster is competing for a coveted national choral prize.
Peter Aksamit-Hollingworth will go up against three boys and four girls for a chance to be named BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year 2013.
The competition is today, and Peter, who is in Year 8 at the Minster School will sing two short pieces before a panel of judges at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square.
Robert Sharpe, York Minster’s director of music, said: “Peter only joined the Minster Choir last year, and it has been a pleasure having him as part of the team. We are extremely proud of him for progressing so far in this competition.
“He has got a beautiful voice, so we wish him the very best of luck in the final.”
Peter has fought off competition from about 100 other choristers in the UK to get a place in the final of the prestigious competition.
One girl and one boy will each be awarded the title BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year 2013.
The event is open to choristers between the ages of 11 and 17 who sing regularly with their choir in services.
The two chosen winners will each receive a trophy and tuition with a vocal coach. They may also have opportunities to appear and perform on national radio and television.
