8:33am Wednesday 23rd October 2013 in News
A PRINCIPAL children and families’ social worker has been appointed at City of York Council for the first time.
Donna Barnes joins the authority from East Riding of Yorkshire Council and is the first person to hold the new statutory post in York.
The role was recommended by Prof Eileen Munro following her review of the English Child Protection System.
Ms Barnes will have responsibility for supporting the council's social workers who work with families and children, providing training and giving examples of best practice, as well as challenging the workforce to continually improve their skills and working practices.
She said: “As a former front-line social worker and team manager, I know the difficulties and constraints that social workers face, but I also know the difference that their work can make to people’s lives. I’m looking forward to working in York to help families and children across the city.”
