ReVive International charity moves to safe house in Brazil
A CHARITY set up in Brazil by a York expat to help save children from abuse and street prostitution has moved into the safe-house it has been craving.
ReVive International, which is run by Andy Roberts and his wife Rose, is a pioneering charity in Olinda in north-eastern Brazil, where forced street prostitution is a major problem.
The organisation, which has strong support through churches and donors in York, aims to help vulnerable children who have fallen victim to sexual exploitation, trafficking and abuse. It raised £50,000 to buy the house where girls rescued from forced prostitution can be counselled and given medical treatment, and helped back into education and training, and it has now taken possession of the house and is preparing it for the first residents.
Mr Roberts, who is from Badger Hill, said: “We’ve finally completed the house purchase and ReVive has the keys. We’re so pleased. It’s taken a lot of work to get here, but we’ve taken another huge step towards opening up the girls’ home.”
The charity has now written to supporters asking them to help fill the house, by buying items from a “housewarming list” of items such as pieces of furniture, electrical items, bedding and office items.
Mr Roberts, 27, founded the charity having witnessed extreme poverty during his gap year in Brazil. Earlier this year, he told The Press he had been working for a charity when he met three sisters aged eight, ten and 12, who had been prostituted by their mother, and he had been dismayed at the lack of professional help available.
He said then: “When we saw the situation that the young girls were in and heard that there was nothing or very little being done to help them, we knew that we had to act.”
Support has come from various churches including St Michael le Belfrey in York, where Mr Roberts’s father Jim is on the clergy team.
The house will help up to 12 girls aged 15 or younger and will provide professional medical, psychological and educational care.
