Pensioner robbed in early morning attack
A PENSIONER was robbed in Selby while returning from buying her morning paper.
The 72-year-old woman was walking across the green area at Garden Court, Selby, towards Charles Street at about 7.15am today, when a man pushed her in the back and snatched her purse from her hands.
A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the victim screamed during the incident, and a number of people rushed to help her, but the robber got away with the purse, which contained cash and personal items.
Detective Constable Kendra Wedgwood of Selby CID, said: “This was a very distressing incident for the victim, although she was not physically injured, she was very shocked by what happened.
“We are carrying out extensive enquiries in the area to bring whoever carried out the attack to justice and are asking for the public’s assistance. I would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the robbery or saw a man running away from the area.”
A similar incident happened in the Church Hill area last Monday, October 7, but police said it was too soon to say whether the two incidents were related.
Sergeant Jackie Booth of Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “This is the second incident of this nature in recent days and I would like to reassure local people that we are doing everything possible to bring the people responsible to justice.”
Police officers and Police Community Support Officers have been sent out on extra patrols to reassure residents in the area, and will continue to do so into the weekend.
