York included in new Crap Towns book

CITY leaders have poured scorn on York’s inclusion in a list of Britain’s least-liked urban centres.
Ten years on from the original release of novelty book Crap Towns, the new Crap Towns Returns features York at number five on its top 50 worst places to live in the UK.
The book is based on a public poll, and also takes house prices, crime statistics, transport and local attitudes into account.
City council leader James Alexander said he would not comment on the inclusion of York on the list, as he did not want to “give such a joke publication any credibility”.
Gillian Cruddas, chief executive for Visit York, said: “The publisher of this list can’t possibly have visited York, which of course is a city not a town.
“Anyone who’s been here will know that we have cutting edge culture such as the current outdoor theatrical production of Blood And Chocolate, a vibrant shopping scene, with more independent retailers than any other city of its size and visitor attractions of world class acclaim, such as the National Railway Museum.”
The book found London to be the worst place to live in the country, followed by Bradford, Chipping Norton, Southampton and York.
