Number of businesses grow in York
THE last year has seen York support 125 more businesses than in 2012 according to new figures.
Data released by the Office of National Statistics shows that from March last year to March 2013 the number of private sector businesses in the city has risen from 8010 to 8135.
The figures show micro businesses, which have up to five employees, and SME’s, which have 249 staff or less, were areas of growth in York with numbers for both at an all time high.
Cllr James Alexander, leader of City of York Council, said he is not surprised by the figures given the work the authority has done to support enterprise.
He said: “Ensuring economic development in the city is a key priority for the council and one we are constantly working to support through our jobs and growth agenda.
“These figures reflect the work we have undertaken with partners to facilitate an environment in York in which businesses can viably start-up or relocate.”
Once broken down into sectors the figures show that property, information and communication, and professional, scientific and technical firms saw the biggest increase in business numbers, up 47.5 per cent, 18.7 per cent and 11.3 per cent respectively.
However some sectors reported a decrease in business numbers. The construction industry fell by 7.4 per cent, accommodation and food services fell by 6.4 per cent, and the numbers of entertainment, recreation and leisure businesses was down 4.4 per cent.
