York Wheel is dismantled
8:37am Thursday 3rd October 2013 in News
IT’S been a familiar and giant sight on York’s skyline for the last 21 months – but now it’s disappearing fast.
The York Wheel is being dismantled after giving visitors a final aerial view of the city last weekend. It has operated from the grounds of the Royal York Hotel since December 2011, and 18 staff face losing their jobs.
Owners of the 53-metre wheel, Wheels Entertainments, had hoped to keep it spinning for longer, but were told by City of York Council that any application for a second extension to its planning permission would be unlikely to succeed, although the firm has not ruled out finding an alternative location in York.
The wheel carried more than 500,000 passengers during its time at the Royal York, its second York site having previously been based at the National Railway Museum, but residents of nearby Westgate Apartments claimed it was invasive and noisy. It will now be moved to another city, possibly in Yorkshire.
