MP calls for Allerton Park incinerator plan to be abandoned

A NORTH Yorkshire MP has called for the county council to finally abandon plans for a rubbish incinerator plant at Allerton Park.
Andrew Jones, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, wants North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) to drop the scheme because the situation has changed drastically since NYCC granted planning permission for the plant in October last year.
Government funding has been withdrawn and the Harrogate district has introduced new recycling schemes meaning the volume of waste available has fallen, which he believes mean the “fundamentals” of the decision have changed so dramatically that the decision is no longer valid.
The “long stop” date – a chance for discussion between the County Council and contractor Amey Cespa – has now arrived and as the scheme has not been given the final go-ahead NYCC’s Executive are to discuss options at a meeting on October 1, and could remove the incinerator element of the proposal.
Mr Jones said: “It is time to go back to the drawing-board in light of the very different circumstances in which North Yorkshire County Council finds itself today from when this process started several years ago.”
