Peter and Elaine Smith celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary

A YORK couple are celebrating 60 years of happy marriage, surrounded by their family.
Peter and Elaine Smith met more than 60 years ago when Elaine was a young nurse at York’s Fever Hospital in Huntington Road, and Peter had just left the navy.
They were married at St Stephen’s Church in Acomb on September 28, 1953, and held a reception in the church hall before their honeymoon in Torquay.
The couple spent much of their married life at their home at Chapelfields, and now live in Woodthorpe.
Peter, now 85, worked as an engine driver after he left the navy and Elaine, 83, carried on nursing between caring for their four sons and two daughters. Elaine, originally from Cowdenbeath in Scotland, said she can still remember her wedding day 60 years later.
The secret to their long marriage has been their truthfulness, she added.
“I never kept any secrets, and I’ve always been honest,” Elaine said.
They were spending their landmark anniversary celebrating with family at a special party at Holgate Working Men’s Club, which was organised by their children.
