MORE than 30,000 people have thrown their weight behind a campaign to see Richard III re-buried in York Minister.
A petition launched by campaigners and descendants of the last English king to be killed in battle has closed after six months with 31,247 signatures.
A spokesman for the Platagenet Alliance, the group supporting York’s claim for the king’s remains, Vanessa Roe said: “Thirty thousand is a fair number, and just shows the support for the York cause.”
A rival petition set up calling for Richard’s remains to stay in Leicester currently has around 25,000 signatories and will close on October 12.
The wrangle over the remains is set to reach a judicial review in the coming weeks, and the York campaigners are hopeful that the petition’s support will boost their claim by showing the judge how much support they have.
“We are moving forward for York and for Richard,” Vanessa added.
