University of York Students’ Union given permission to stage Live & Loud

YORK students have secured a licence to hold their flagship freshers’ week celebration and other outdoor events, following objections from local residents.
City of York Council has granted the University of York Students’ Union (YUSU) permission to stage Live & Loud, the main event for new students, at the university’s Heslington East campus on October 5.
The licence will also allow up to 11 other outdoor events to be staged a year, if necessary.
Heslington and Badger Hill residents had said the outdoor events would cause noise problems and 23 objectors raised concerns with the council about the licensing application.
YUSU said Live & Loud and any other events will have individual noise management plans, with parish councils being consulted in advance and residents kept informed.
Next month’s Live & Loud will finish at midnight, an hour earlier than last year, and the students’ union has said it plans to involve local residents in any future events and discuss their ideas, while it has also stopped amplified sound being played outdoors at campus events after 9pm on school nights.
