FOUR charities are in the running to win a year’s support from BBC Radio York following the station’s appeal for a good cause to back.

Earlier this year, the station announced it would work with a charity partner to help celebrate its 30th anniversary, and bosses were looking for a charity which made a difference to the lives of people in the county.

Representatives for charities around North Yorkshire were invited to pitch their fundraising ideas to the radio station, and almost 30 formal applications were submitted before a shortlist of four was announced.

The announcement of which charity will be the station’s charity partner will be made next Monday. The four finalists are:

• The RNLI Scarborough Lifeboat Appeal, which provides a 24-hour search and rescue service, and costs about £385,000 per day to run.

• York Against Cancer, which has helped cancer patients in the city since 1987, and helps fund cancer research and care.

• York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Charity, which operates York Hospital, but also provides services for about 540,000 people around the county

• Martin House Children’s Hospice’s Good Night’s Sleep Appeal, which provides the families of severely ill children with five nights’ support and care in the hospice.

Adam Tomlinson, pictured, who presents the breakfast show on the station, said: “It’s been fantastic to hear about the work of all the charities and I’m looking forward to sharing their stories with my listeners.

“I can’t wait to reveal the winner of the charity appeal – the next twelve months of fundraising will be inspiring, and with the combined support of the radio team and our listeners, I’m sure we’ll make a big difference to people’s lives across North Yorkshire.”

The chosen charity will be announed next Monday at 8am, on Adam’s show, which is available on 103.7fm in York and surrounding areas, on 95.5fm on the coast, 104.3fm in Harrogate and surroundings, or online at bbc.co.uk/radioyork
