Archbishop of York meets troops in East Yorkshire
7:44am Wednesday 18th September 2013 in News
THE Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has been given a taste of life behind the wheel of military vehicles in East Yorkshire.
The Archbishop visited the Defence School of Transport in Leconfield, East Yorkshire, this week, and met students from all three Armed Forces.
At any one time, the driving school can train up to 1,500 personnel and provides more than 140 different courses, delivering transport management and operation training, for over 19,000 trainees a year.
Dr Sentamu said: “I came here three years ago but then I didn’t go on a drive around the training area.
“This time I met some people who had just qualified and had just passed their driving test as well as others who were going to be deployed and it was good to be able to experience the terrain on which they train.”
Dr Sentamu was driven over some of the steep inclines and mazes of an imitation Afghan town centre, and said he would be interested in learning new driving skills.
