Mel C’s a real sport for Great North runner Amy Platt

A NORTH Yorkshire woman has been in training with her sister and a sporty pop star to help raise money for charity.
Amy Platt, from Beal, near Selby, is taking part in the Great North Run on Sunday to help raise money for Yorkshire children’s cancer charity Candlelighters, alongside her sister Alice Birdsall, 22.
Amy, 27, said Candlelighters was particularly close to her heart as it helped support her husband, Andrew, and his family through cancer when he was diagnosed at the age of 13.
She said: “Neither of us run at all, but we decided to go for it. My husband when he was a teenager had cancer and was supported through it all by Candlelighters and we throught it’s a fantastic charity, let’s not put it off another year, let’s do it.
“Andy has been fully clear for 15 years now, and we have two lovely little girls, and he’s happy and well, so we thought we should celebrate. We wanted to show children can get over cancer and have normal and happy lives.”
As part of her training, Amy attended a special event at Gateshead International Stadium with Melanie Chisholm, or Sporty Spice. Although Alice was unable to make it, the pair are part of a small team taking part in a special fundraising challenge sponsored by Vodafone.
Amy said: “It’s a north versus south competition, to see who can raise the most money. She was really lovely, down to earth and took part in it all, got on with it like we did. She signed our shirts too, to help raise money. So far we’ve raised £1,347. We really wanted to raise £500, so we’re really pleased and just want to keep going.”
