A YORK author who sold the rights of his fantasy trilogy to film producers earlier this year released his second novel on Saturday, writes Neil Johnston.
Alex Willmott gained national recognition last year after releasing his first book, Selah: A Rebellious Hope, with one critic tipping him to become ‘‘this generation’s Tolkien’’.
Now the second instalment from the Welsh writer, who lives in York, has already been commended by some critics.
Selah: Those Who Arrive In Darkness has been described as “a frenetic collision of good and evil leaving humanity hanging in the balance” by The Press Association, while award-winning journalist Jon Livesey said: “He isn’t merely on a crusade to pay homage to CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien and the Brothers Grimm, he’s more than that, much more.’’
The fantasy trilogy follows the life of Elah, a gritty British man who has been tasked to defend both the Earth and another realm called Selah from powerful forces of darkness.
In the second book, Elah joins forces with an American, Sgt Ron Jameson, as they take on ruthless leader Rao in an epic battle as part of a novel featuring poetry, war, laughter, horror and love.
Mr Willmott said: “It was a dream come true to sell the rights of book one and two to three producers in London.
‘‘I’ve read the screenplay of the first book and it’s immense.”
He said: “There’s a lot of pressure on the second book after the success of the first, but there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s a much more solid piece of writing.
‘‘The characters are more developed and the plot is crazier and more exciting than ever.”
• Selah: Those Who Arrive In Darkness is available on Kindle and tablet for £1.59 and more information can be found on Alex’s website or by following him on Twitter at @alexinboxes
