York Sport Village celebrates first birthday with VIP day
A TOP sporting facility in York has celebrated its first birthday with VIP gym passes, swimming vouchers, a bouncy castle and, of course, a birthday cake.
York Sport Village, in Lakeside Way, benefited from a £9 million investment last year and now offers 23 fitness classes including spinning, kettlebells and zumba.
The village celebrated its anniversary with a party, when guests were given a guided tour of the facilities, which include two swimming pools, a competition size 3G football pitch and a 120-station fitness suite with TVs.
Keith Morris, head of sport at the University of York, said: “The open day was a huge success and we received a lot of positive feedback from regulars and those who visited us for the first time to enjoy the day.”
The new facilities have attracted more than 80,000 visitors over the past year, which has meant spa facilities and a café have been opened to meet the demand.
The village is also home to various community sporting projects. It hosts five-a-side tournaments for men and women as well as running club Just Jog.
The centre has attracted major sporting names to it as well, with Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme visiting the new 1km outdoor cycling track in July as he checked on preparations for the 2014 tours grand depart from Yorkshire on July 5.
