YORK’S biggest community amateur sports club showed that it was not just a place for footballers as it started two months of taster sessions for the public.
Club president Frank Paterson said: “People still think because we are called the York Railway Institute it is confined to railway employees.
“It’s not. It’s for all the public. Anyone can join. We provide a very wide range of sports.”
The club’s venues host badminton, squash, dinghy racing, weightlifting, table tennis, judo, football, rugby among other sports, as well as ballet and dance classes and is hoping to encourage women to take up golf with women’s-only sessions for beginners at Pike Hills Golf Club.
