York Feminist Network in lads’ mags protest at York Tesco store
A PROTEST against lads’ magazines has been held outside a York supermarket.
Members of York Feminist Network held the protest on Saturday at Tesco in Askham Bar, aimed at magazines such as Nuts and Zoo.
The protest was part of the wider “Lose the Lads’ Mags” campaign run by UK Feminista and Object and coincided with other protests taking place nationwide. It was attended by about 15 people in York.
Kasia Narkowicz, of the York Feminist Network, said: “I think lads’ mags are quite damaging to young girls, young boys, women and men and the whole society. They are portraying a very sexualised image of women and women are seen to be sexualised objects and I don’t think that should be part of our society.
“When lads’ mags are in our biggest retailers, they do influence people.
“We were worried people would be negative about the protest, but many people came up to us and had a chat and said they supported us. It was a nice atmosphere.”
A Tesco spokeswoman has said front covers would be more modest and would be placed on the back tier of the shelf, but Ms Narkowicz said they did not feel that was not addressing the issue.
