Go-ahead for flats on The Press site in Walmgate, York
10:54am Friday 23rd August 2013 in News
The way is clear for more than 350 student flats and apartments to be built on the site of The Press offices in Walmgate, York.
Planning councillors meeting last night voted to approve the scheme by York-based development company S Harrison Developments Ltd.
Chris Hale, design manager of S Harrison Developments, said: “We are pleased that after seven years of discussion about its future The Press offices are at last getting a new lease of life.”
Five councillors objected to the development due to concerns from Rowntree Wharf residents that the seven-storey building would block sunlight coming into their apartments, but 11 councillors voted in favour.
The Press is due to remain on the Walmgate site, but in smaller, purpose-built offices.
Speaking at the meeting David Coates, regional managing director of Newsquest Yorkshire and North East, said: “This will help us secure our future in the city.”
The work, which will create 648 student rooms, is expected to begin within weeks.
