YORK CENTRAL MP Hugh Bayley has tabled a Commons motion, calling on the Government to provide enough funding not only for the NRM to stay open but also to keep collecting, researching, conserving and exhibiting artefacts.

The Early Day Motion, signed by seven MPs, recognises that the number of visitors to the NRM and other national museums has soared since entry charges were removed and welcomes the Government’s commitment to retain free entry.

However, it expresses concern about the 25 per cent reduction in grant in aid received by the parent organisaiton, the Science Museum Group, over recent years, and alarm at fears that further poor funding would leave it with little choice but to close one of the museums.

The motion says it is the responsibility of the Culture Secretary to protect the country’s culture and heritage and make it accessible to the public.
