THE flora and fauna of North Yorkshire provide the inspiration for the latest exhibition at Gallery Beyond in Nunnington.

The gallery has teamed up with The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to present an exhibition of work by two local artists – Jonathan Pomroy, one of the country’s foremost wildlife painters, and Carolyn Smith, who creates beautiful drawings of trees.

The exhibition runs from June 21 until August 8.

Jonathan spends a great deal of his time out in the field, filling sketchbooks and photographing, and the passion he feels about the natural world is conveyed in his work.

All his paintings are composed from sketches and observations made in the field in all winds and weather, giving his work a fluidity and an immediacy that conveys the constant movement of the birds and creatures featured in his work.

Jonathan has exhibited all over Britain and after a career spanning 20 years is now regarded as one of the country’s foremost wildlife artists.

“I’m inspired by this area because there’s so much variety,” he said.

“One day I could be sketching puffins at Bempton Cliffs, the next red grouse on the moors.

“I often spend time sketching at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserves such as Fen Bog and Tophill Low, and therefore it seemed fitting to support the work of this wonderful charity through the exhibition.”

Meanwhile, Carolyn Smith cultivates the spiritual connection she feels to the landscape. Working in pen and ink, she creates meticulous drawings of her favourite trees. Each piece takes hours to make – Carolyn describes each drawing as ‘a meditation in its own right’ in which she strives to capture the ‘spirit of place’.

In 2011 Carolyn was artist in residence at The Arboretum, Castle Howard, and much of her recent work has been inspired by its wonderful trees.

“I am drawn to the sculptural qualities of the landscape around me,” said Carolyn.

“I am particularly fascinated by trees, they are sculptural objects in their own right.”

The exhibition is being held in support of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and 10 per cent of profits of sales will be donated to the charity.

The Royal Oak Pub in Nunnington will also be making a donation to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust on items chosen from their daily specials board.
