SOME of Britain’s brightest new writing talents are heading to York for a debate and discussion about the inspiration behind their work.

The writers’ event on June 15 at the University of York’s Ron Cooke Hub is part of the city’s Festival of Ideas and will feature 12 new authors who will read from their novels, take questions and talk about how they secured publishing deals.

It includes an audience with three writers – Ross Raisin, Jenni Fagan and Kamila Shamsie – featured on the Best of Young British Novelists 2013 list compiled by writing magazine Granta.

Dr Claire Chambers from the university’s department of English and related literature said: “This is a great opportunity to hear new and established writers read from and discuss their work, learn how to get published and how to build up a career as a writer.”

Author and former York student Susie Steiner will begin the event and other writers include Elizabeth Day, Gavin Weston, Kate Worsley, D W Wilson, Matthew Reynolds, Claire King, Abigail Tarttelin and Leonie Frieda.

The event begins at 4pm and tickets are free but must be booked, with more information at yorkfestivalofideas.com/2013
