ALLERTHORPE Park and country house, formerly home to Allerthorpe Park Golf Club, has been put up for sale.

The golf club closed its gates in January when tenants Driving Foreward, which traded as Allerthorpe Park Golf Club, appointed liquidators.

The 96-acre golf course, and 8,000 sq ft of indoor space currently used for conferencing at the site are now being sold.

Agent Chris Clubley, of Chris Clubley Estate Agency, said that subject to planning, the site could be brought back into use under a variety of different purposes.

He said: “We have had quite a bit of interest. Subject to planning, there are a lot of things it could be used for in the leisure industry or it could even revert to agriculture or a private residence.”

The land could also be used for equestrian purposes, he said.

No guide price is indicated and they are looking for expressions of interest for whole or part of the site, to buy or to rent.

In March, The Press reported that landlord of the site, Jonathan Atkinson, was back in possession of the site from the liquidators and did not intend to continue to trade it as a golf club.

Mr Atkinson and his father John, both of Pocklington, developed the site, which used to be agricultural land, into a nine-hole course in 1994. It was expanded in 1998 into a 13-hole course and again in 2001 to an 18-hole course.

Golf pro James Drinkall, his parents Jan and Paul, and wife Alex, took over the lease on the property and ran the golf club from 2008. They invested £500,000 in the course, which had a teaching academy and pro golf shop, as well as a bar, clubhouse, function room and conference facilities, before appointing liquidators in January as result of the stalled economy and bad weather.
