IS your mum or dad one in a million? Or do you know parents worth recognition for the lengths they have gone to for their children?

The parent of the year category in The Press Community Pride Awards aims to give recognition to extra-special parents who have gone out of their way for their children and others.

Those shortlisted for the award will be invited to the annual awards ceremony at the racecourse later this year.

York family business, Barnitts, is long-standing sponsor of the award, which managing director and father-of-four Paul Thompson, said he is proud to sponsor in order to give parents recognition for their hard work.

Mr Thompson said: “Parenting is not a simple thing, it never stops and anything can be thrown in front of you. We sponsor this award to really recognise parents who selflessly put themselves out.

“I would urge people to nominate those who go the extra mile to be a parent.”

The category is open to mums, dads, guardians and foster parents.

Last year’s parent of the year was Barbara Anderson, after judges heard how she went out of her way to support her family while also caring for those who are ill in the wider community as well as vulnerable teens in her home as a Safe and Sound Homes host.

The Community Pride Awards are run in partnership with City of York Council and sponsored by Benenden Health.
