A SUCCESSFUL liver transplant patient from York is starting a support group for patients awaiting a transplant or recovering from one of the life-saving procedures.

Alfred Redpath, from Acomb, underwent his operation two years ago at York Hospital, during a battle with cancer.

While successful, he said there is little in the way of help or information available for patients once they were discharged from hospital.

Mr Redpath, 71, said: “I would like to get an idea of how many people there are in York who have had a liver transplant. I only know of one other person apart from me.

“In 2010 I found out I had cancer in my liver.

“It was only small so they operated on the affected part but the cancer came back and they decided to put me on the transplant list.”

Mr Redpath was luckier than most when a suitable match was found for him within three weeks.

“I’m now able to get on with my life but I just want others to be able to get access to services,” he said.

“You need help, obviously, when you come out of hospital after a transplant but I had to find out for myself who to contact for things like disability and mobility aids.

“I know they have groups in Leeds, which are held every three months but there’s nothing for people in York.”

Mr Redpath said he is currently looking at potential locations which would be suitable for regular meetings. He said: “What we want to be able to do is offer someone to talk to if you are worried about your transplant.”
