PUPILS and staff at a York primary school have celebrated being the first in the city to get top marks under new Government inspection rules.

Poppleton Ousebank Primary School with 474 pupils was inspected under the tougher Ofsted system which came in to force last September.

Schools are usually given only a day’s notice before inspectors carry out their inspection.

Poppleton were graded the top mark of outstanding.

Children, staff and governors marked the achievement with a celebration day, which included an aerial photograph taken of the children on the school field, parties and a parade.

Head teacher Estelle O’Hara, who has been at the school since September 2007, said: “At our last inspection in April 2008 we were given a “good” and it’s been quite a difficult journey we have made since then, but the staff as a team have really grown in strength and now every classroom you go in you are guaranteed great teaching. When staff come and work here they don’t want to leave. I’m very proud of the pupils, parents and staff at Poppleton Ousebank.”

In the report, lead inspector Rajinder Harrison said: “Pupils of all ages flourish in this vibrant and happy school because they are valued, safe and well cared for. There is a very strong sense of community and in this atmosphere of mutual respect, staff ensure all pupils do as well as they possibly can.

“The head teacher’s drive and enthusiasm and high commitment from all staff and governors have transformed this school from good to outstanding. As a result, parents, staff and pupils are justifiably proud of their school.”

Coun Janet Looker, City of York Council’s cabinet member for education, said: “This outstanding judgement is testament to the hard work and dedication not just of Poppleton Ousebank Primary School, but also the remarkably strong support from our local community.

“Our congratulations and thanks go to the head teacher, pupils, staff, governors and parents who can be very proud of what they have all achieved.”
