FANS of York City FC have been praised by police for their behaviour during Saturday’s crucial match at Northampton.

Police said the travelling City support set a good example on a weekend when other matches were marred by trouble.

There was fighting in the stands at Wembley during the FA Cup semi-final between Wigan and Millwall and large-scale disorder following Newcastle United’s home defeat to Sunderland.

However, the conduct of the 719 York supporters who made the trip to Northampton to watch City win three vital points in their battle against relegation has been complimented by Northamptonshire Police and Northampton Town FC, as well as North Yorkshire Police.

Football liaison officer Sgt Colin Sutherland, of North Yorkshire Police, who travelled to Northampton with the City fans, said: “It was very satisfying not only to see for ourselves, but to hear the positive comments fed back to us regarding the excellent behaviour of the travelling York City fans.

"When images such as those from recent events at Wembley are displayed around the world, it was pleasing to see dedicated supporters concentrating solely on vociferously supporting their team, and doing so in the right manner.”
