THE 290 candidates who will battle it out for seats in North Yorkshire’s county council elections have been confirmed.

Voters across the region will go to the polls on May 2 to decide who will represent them in the 72 electoral divisions on North Yorkshire County Council for the next four years.

All seats are up for grabs, with the authority currently controlled by the Conservatives, who have 46 councillors. The party is fielding 71 candidates, with Labour having 63, the Liberal Democrats 35, the Greens 25 and UKIP - whose leader Nigel Farage visited Scarborough this week - 48.

There are also 32 independent candidates, with five of those standing in the Richmondshire area running under the Save the Friarage Hospital banner.
