Bleak spring scene at Clifford’s Tower

The scene at Clifford’s Tower during this week in March, 2012 The scene at Clifford’s Tower during this week in March, 2012

WHAT a difference a year makes.

This time last year, with York basking in glorious sunshine, the daffodils on the City Walls and on the slopes below Clifford’s Tower were in full bloom.

Now, with temperatures barely rising above freezing and sleet and snow forecast to fall again last night, the buds remain tightly closed.

Weathermen do not hold out much hope for immediate relief, with further sleet and snow expected to sweep the area tomorrow night and into Friday morning.

The one consolation may be that the daffs will finally bloom at just the right time to delight the hordes of tourists visiting York over the Easter weekend.

I think the fact that since last year hundreds of people have ignored the signs to keep off the grass and have churned up the slope has as much to do with the poor display.

A pity that some form of fencing cannot be installed to prevent pedestrians and some kids on bikes, from misusing the slope. It is starting to show signs of erosion in some places.

It's obviously the councils fault. They have made so many cuts even the daffodils are feeling the pinch this year.

I am going to blame George Osborne. Not that he'd ever notice the likes of me.

James Alexander for me.

...maybe York Daffodils are civil servants in costume and are on strike.

Very poor standard of English by some contributors.

Ichabod76 please note that "their" should be "they're" ie "they are."

And Ringo Starr gets the dunce's cap!

What! No article in your first line? Definite or indefinite.

A very poor standard indeed!

Barely worth mentioning that "ie" (sic) should be italicised as it is Latin and should have two full stops as it is an abbreviation.

Hope they get those "daffs" in bloom before I am back in York for Easter. Is the weather going to get better?,will I need my coat?.
At least having a penny less to pay on my pint of John Smith's will make a big saving on my spending money.

Those Daffs look much better today, and by the way...drinking JS can give you the same groin injury as playing rugby!

Agree with the comment about the state of the bank - so many people blatantly ignore the (rather small) signs. It is starting to look rutted and eroded in many places, and is in need of some TLC. With the prices charged to get into Clifford's Tower, surely there must be some cash in the coffers to do this?

Sunnysteve,

John Smiths? Seriously?

We need to discuss this over a pint of Theakstons/ Yorkshire Terrier/ Rudgate...and some crisps...

I get the impression you're travelling from a distance, Bon Voyage and enjoy your stay!
