Firms urged to take up York 10K corporate challenge

HUNDREDS of businessmen and women will battle it out to be the fastest firm in the city as part of the York 10K corporate challenge.

Mike Tomlinson was in the city yesterday to launch this year’s event which will see hundreds of people from businesses across Yorkshire taking part, running through the city centre on Sunday, August 4, for some of the region’s charities.

Morrison Utility Services - a loyal supporter since the inaugural 10k event in 2009 - has once again pledged its support for the corporate challenge. Corporate entries for the event – one of the biggest of its kind in the region – were officially opened yesterday.

Norrie Forbes, commercial director of Morrison Utility Services, said: “The enthusiasm of the teams and sense of achievement at the end of the race makes the event really special.

“We would like to encourage the companies who have previously taken part and would encourage new companies to take up the challenge in 2013.”

Also at the launch were representatives from last year’s winning team – Neil Pike from Turner & Townsend consultants, who ran the 10K in 39m 30secs, and Vincent Durkan, from Balfour Beatty, who crossed the line in 38m 02secs.

Mr Tomlinson, husband of Jane, the inspirational fundraiser and cancer sufferer who dedicated the final years of her life to raising money for charity, said: “The corporate challenge is great fun event that is perfect for team-building and firing up your competitive spirit. It’s also a fantastic way of rewarding the team. We have firms who return year after year and tell us it is one of the highlights of their calendar.”

The corporate challenge is open to teams of ten – or five for smaller businesses – and includes VIP hospitality on the day and an awards evening to take place in the week after the event, where the fastest firm will have bragging rights.
