Flats evacuated in roof fire alert

RESIDENTS in York flats have been evacuated from their homes after a fire started in the roof.

Six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were called to Rowntree Wharf, in Navigation Road, yesterday morning after a fire started in the roof void of a fifth floor landing.

A fire service spokesman said the cause of the fire, which was reported at about 7am, was being investigated, A resident, who did not give their name, said about 50 or 60 people were evacuated from the building at about 7am and were eventually allowed to return to their homes nearly two hours later.
